Advanced Typing Practice: From 80 WPM to 120 WPM and Beyond
You have mastered the home row. You can type at 60-80 WPM with 95%+ accuracy. You are faster than 80% of typists. But you want more. The jump from 80 to 120 WPM is not about typing the same thing faster; it is about removing the bottlenecks that hold you back: numbers, symbols, code patterns, and rare keys.
This guide explains what separates 80 WPM typists from 120 WPM typists, the specific patterns to drill, and an advanced practice plan.
What 120 WPM Typists Do Differently
Three differences:
If you can type the entire keyboard at speed with no hesitation, you can hit 100+ WPM. If you also have proper ergonomics, you can hit 120+ WPM without injury.
The Number Row Bottleneck
The number row is the biggest bottleneck for most typists. They trained the letter rows but never drilled the number row. The result: every digit drops their speed by 30%.
The fix is dedicated number-row drills. The home position for the left hand is 4-5-6 (ring, middle, index fingers). For the right hand, it is 7-8-9 (index, middle, ring). The thumbs do not reach the number row; they stay on the space bar.
Drill the number row for 10 minutes a day, every day, for 4 weeks. After that, the number row is as fast as the letter rows. Your WPM on number-heavy text (dates, prices, addresses) will jump 30-50%.
The Symbol Bottleneck
Symbols are the second biggest bottleneck. Brackets, braces, semicolons, colons, slashes, backslashes, pipes, ampersands, asterisks, and the dollar sign are all off the home row. Most typists have to look at the keyboard to type them.
The fix is symbol drills. Practice these as standalone patterns:
Drill each as a standalone line, 10 times per day, for 2 weeks. The symbols become automatic.
Code Pattern Drills
If you type code, certain patterns repeat thousands of times per day:
Drill each as a complete line, 10 times per day, for 2 weeks. The patterns become automatic. Your code typing speed will jump 50%.
The Word Pattern Drills
Beyond code, certain English word patterns are slow because they require finger movement. The biggest offenders:
Drill these as standalone words, 20 times per day, for 2 weeks. The muscle memory transfers to every sentence you type.
The Accuracy Floor
At 100+ WPM, errors compound fast. A 5% error rate at 100 WPM means 5 errors per minute, 300 per hour. The fix is the accuracy floor: never push speed at the cost of accuracy. If your accuracy drops below 97%, slow down. Speed comes from consistency, not from sprinting.
The Ergonomics of Speed
Fast typists have one thing in common: light keystrokes. They do not hit the keys; they tap them. The energy comes from gravity and finger weight, not from muscle force. Heavy keystrokes lead to fatigue, errors, and injury.
Practice light keystrokes for 5 minutes a day. The goal is the minimum force required to register a key. After a few weeks, your typing will be smoother, faster, and less fatiguing.
An Advanced Practice Plan
You have 30 minutes a day, ideally in long blocks.
Morning 15 minutes: 5 minutes home row, 5 minutes number row, 5 minutes symbol drill.
Afternoon 15 minutes: 1-minute test, then 10 minutes of code or word-pattern drill.
Weekly: a 5-minute test to track WPM and accuracy over time.
Within 8 weeks, expect to add 20-30 WPM to your overall speed. Within 16 weeks, you will be in the top 1% of typists.
The Bigger Picture
Pushing past 100 WPM is not about ego. It is about removing the friction between your thinking and the page. The fastest typists report that the keyboard becomes invisible at 100+ WPM. They stop noticing the keys. Their thoughts become the only thing on the screen. That is the goal.
